Survey About Investing in Condominium Units

By Jim Woodard Copley News Service - More than 65 percent of the country's six million condominium units were owner-occupied last year, the Mortgage Bankers Association says.

Fewer than 25 percent of condos were rented out, MBA found in a survey, suggesting condos aren't seen as an investment vehicle by many owners. Some 16 percent were empty.

There's a bit of misperception among households about what a typical condo looks like, MBA says. Most people believe condos are located within big multifamily buildings, but the survey shows that 49 percent were in buildings with no more than four units.

Moreover, 36 percent of condos were single-family dwellings detached units; and only 14 percent of these were rented out. Buildings with 50-plus units accounted for 13 percent of condos, 32 percent of which were occupied by renters.
